Our Story

A second career, stitched by hand

HostVault Tailors did not start in a fashion school. It started in an office cubicle, with a man quietly bored by every shirt in the room.

Founder and master tailor of HostVault Tailors in his workshop

From spreadsheets to shears

Our founder, Harvind Rajan, spent eighteen years in corporate banking. Client meetings across four continents taught him two things: how to listen carefully, and how depressingly similar every wardrobe in every boardroom had become.

The turning point was small. A colleague's retirement dinner, a rented suit that fit no one, and a grandfather's story about the Brickfields tailor who once dressed half the neighbourhood for weddings. Within a year Harvind had traded his desk for an apprenticeship under a veteran cutter in Kuala Lumpur, learning to draft patterns the slow way — chalk, shears, and endless unpicked seams.

Banking, it turns out, was excellent preparation. Tailoring is a service business built on trust, honest advice and deadlines that cannot slip. The tools changed; the discipline never did.

Today the atelier in Kelana Jaya serves executives, brides and grooms, families ordering school uniforms, and a loyal circle of clients who simply refuse to wear anything cut for somebody else.

Milestones

The years, in stitches

Every workshop accumulates a history. Ours is measured in first suits, repeat clients and the occasional award we did not expect.

  • The first cutting table goes up in a shoplot barely wide enough for the fabric shelves. Four clients in the first month, all family friends.
  • The atelier moves to Dataran Glomac in Kelana Jaya and adds a private fitting suite — appointment-only from this year onward.
  • The kids uniform tailoring programme launches after one too many parents asked whether we could “just fix the school shirt.”
  • Named Rising Craftsman of the Year at the Selangor SME Artisan Awards; shortlisted for the Klang Valley Heritage Trades honour list.
  • The three-thousandth garment leaves the workshop — a batik-lined dinner jacket for a client who ordered his first suit from us in 2013.
How we work

Principles that never leave the room

Honesty over upsell

If an alteration will serve you better than a new commission, we will say so — even when it costs us the bigger sale.

Cloth worth cutting

We would rather stock fewer bolts of excellent fabric than shelves of compromise. Every roll is handled before it is bought.

Fit is a process

No garment leaves after one try-on. Fittings exist to be honest mirrors, and we schedule as many as the garment needs.

Quiet workmanship

Hand-felled seams, canvas chests, real buttonholes. The details nobody photographs are the ones that make a garment last.

Come meet the cutting table

The story reads better in person, with a cup of teh tarik and a wall of cloth to argue over. Book a visit and see for yourself.
